Antisemitism is defined as prejudice against or hatred of Jewish people and has existed for millennia. During the Holocaust, the largest mass genocide in human history, the Nazis and their collaborators murdered six million Jewish men, women, and children across Europe. But antisemitism didn’t start or end there. What makes it one of the oldest and most persistent forms of hatred? This presentation will trace the history of the so-called “longest hatred” from ancient times to today, showing the intersection of four basic threads: religious, socio-economic, political, and racial. This knowledge is crucial to understanding and combating antisemitism in our modern world. Cognition is the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses. It plays an important role in our everyday lives. Some examples of cognition include learning something new, processing language, solving problems, and using memory. This presentation will provide helpful information on how we use it on a daily basis, how it changes as we age, and helpful tips and strategies for improving our own cognition. Healthy Cognition for Adults: A TLC Speech Presentation

Turtles are in trouble. Regarded until recently as indestructible, they are now the most endangered group of vertebrates on the planet. Anthony Pierlioni is the Senior Director of theTurtleRoom, an international organization of conservationists who work to ensure that endangered species don't go extinct. Several of the turtles he rehabilitates are already extinct in the wild and only exist today because of these efforts. You will have the chance to meet these incredible creatures, learn more about Anthony's family conservation work right here in Wallingford, and how that work takes impact around the globe.

During World War II, nearly 120,000 Japanese-Americans were forced to leave their homes on the West Coast and then incarcerated in internment camps. One way to learn about their lives is to see the objects they created during their imprisonment. Nancy Beck, whose family was imprisoned in the internment camps, will present many of these items, from basic necessities such as chairs and tools to a beautiful basket of flowers made from shells, and tell stories of their creators. She will also show footage from the 2011 short documentary Art of Gaman, in which former prisoners share their experiences of "gaman," or "enduring the unbearable with dignity."

Join us the week of Memorial Day for a loving tribute to American music! “Americana Melodies” is an exciting and engaging concert featuring cello, mandolin, banjo and more that explores the history of the U.S. through its songs. Join representatives from Wallingford’s town government, service providers, realtors, homebuilders, and other neighbors for an open and honest conversation about the state of housing in Wallingford — our needs, opportunities, and concerns. If we want a community where everyone can afford a home, we need to hear your voice, your experiences, and your perspective about what options and solutions we can pursue together. This conversation will also offer the chance to get your questions answered, clear up confusion about what “affordable housing” is and isn’t, and learn the facts about who needs housing in Wallingford and what we can do about it together.

Open Doors: A Community Conversation on Affordable Housing

Come celebrate Pride at the Wallingford Public Library! Join us on Friday nights this June for a three-part film series centering LGBTQIA experiences. We will feature the 2018 romantic comedy Love, Simon (PG-13) on June 7, the 2023 documentary Every Body (R) on June 14, and the 2018 Kenyan drama Rafiki (unrated) on June 21. With this series, we wish to showcase stories that bring awareness to the vast history, challenges, triumphs and dreams of those who identify as Queer. Love, Simon: Everyone deserves a great love story, but for 17-year-old Simon Spier, it's a little more complicated. He hasn't told his family or friends that he's gay, and he doesn't know the identity of the anonymous classmate that he's fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Based on the 2015 YA novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli.

We Are Here, We Are Queer Film Series: "Love, Simon"

Paul Colburn, a CT DEEP Master Wildlife Conservationist, presents a natural history of Connecticut from the early 1600’s, when European colonists arrived, to the present day. He describes the relationships between native species and Europeans, particularly in terms of habitat and harvest interactions. In this program, Paul discusses Eastern mountain lions, Eastern gray wolves, Eastern coyotes, elk, turkeys, fishers, white-tailed deer, black bears, New England cottontails, and more. Paul concludes by addressing the state of Connecticut’s wildlife today, current habitat and population issues, and the challenges we face living responsibly with wildlife.&nbsp;

Every Body: This documentary follows the stories of three individuals who have moved from childhoods marked by shame, secrecy and non-consensual surgeries to thriving adulthoods. River Gallo, Alicia Roth Weigel and Sean Saifa Wall are leaders in a fast-growing global movement advocating for greater understanding of the intersex community and an end to unnecessary surgeries. Woven into the story is a stranger-than-fiction case of medical abuse, which helps explain the modern-day treatment of intersex people. PLEASE NOTE: This film is rated R. Anyone under 17 requires an accompanying parent or adult guardian.

Join us for the second event in our Wallingford Table series: a community celebration of Juneteenth! Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On Tuesday, June 18th, we will gather at St. Paul's Episcopal Church to learn all about the history, food &amp; traditions of this storied celebration from a panel of local speakers. Attendees will enjoy delicious Juneteenth refreshments from local Black-owned restaurants and Mayor Cervoni will be present to read the official Juneteenth Proclamation. Following the panel, attendees will be invited to participate in a traditional African dance featuring live drumming!

Rafiki: Kena and Ziki live very different lives in Nairobi. Kena works in her father's shop and awaits the start of nursing school, while Ziki passes the days hanging out with her friends and making up dance routines. Their paths cross when their fathers run against each other for seats in the County Assembly, and they find themselves drawn to each other. Soon their interest grows to affection and the girls find ways to love each other despite the ever-watching gaze of the neighborhood. PLEASE NOTE: This film is not rated. It contains some mild violence and is appropriate for viewers age 13 and up.
