While this is definitely a step in the right direction at least in my town, and I truly commend ourRead More Boys Scouts of Wallingford, I find it very disheartening how our young gay boys were ostracized in the first place! And their parents who want to volunteer-- keyword volunteer, which means taking THEIR time to try and make a difference for our youth of today without pay-- were being turned away for being gay? Preposterous! I am very proud our city's open-minded attitude. My hope is this will spread through our entire country.

Big K, I figured that NO was your answer. My father and mother were of your generation, so we mightRead More look at things from a slightly different perspective, but I have the same story of self-sufficiency and perseverance in my family. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I brought up my children the same way, and although they're all doing well and paying their bills, I don't think it is anywhere near as easy for them to find work and get ahead as it was for me getting out of school 40 years ago. So I honor your position about parents taking responsibility for their kids. But the question still remains about how a society should react when parents either can't or won't take care of them. It seems as if your answer is to do nothing to help those kids, even if that means they themselves end up poorly educated and on the road to jail and / or state assistance. I'm not saying we should have to take care of them, but wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to feed and educate them properly?

TO: Final Judgment; My answer is NO! I didn't state The above as a criticism for anyone. I wonderRead More where we should draw the line for taking on someone else's responsibility. I came from a Large Family of 12 and we were brought up during the height of the "GREAT Depression" and we all managed to get by on our own and everyone of us worked our way through school and received our degrees and none of us went to prison. We all had a good job and Seven (7) of us volunteered to serve our Country during the Wars. What more could we ask for??

That doesn't answer the question, though. Big K's comment suggests a sort of social Darwinism; ifRead More people are too poor or too lazy to feed their kids breakfast, let the kids fall behind academically. But they are the adults who we will be paying to house in prisons or paying state assistance to because they are unable to support themselves well. I'd rather feed them now, but I wish people needed to pass a test to be able to have kids..........
