Ryan Bell of Wallingford Receives Kohl's Cares Scholarship

12-year-old recognized for his efforts to prevent world hunger.

Ryan Bell, 12, of Wallingford has earned a Kohl's Cares Scholarship from the department store chain for his efforts in helping raise $40,000 for Heifer International, an organization that fights worldwide hunger.

Bell was one of nearly 200 volunteers picked from more than 35,000 nominees who've made a positive impact in their local communities.

"Having endured 37 surgeries since birth due to a rare genetic condition and forced to undergo a physical transformation of his own, Ryan is committed to helping transform an impoverished community in an underdeveloped area of the world," a press release from the company said.

$1,000 scholarship winners are chosen based on initiative, leadership, generosity and project benefits and outcome. Each regional-level winner qualifies for one of Kohl’s 10 national scholarships, which will be announced at the end of July. National winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.
