Report: Hayes Sent Suicide Note Before His Latest Attempt

The convicted murderer in the Cheshire home invasion case apparently tried to commit suicide earlier this week.

Convicted murderer Steven Hayes reportedly sent a suicide note to The Hartford Courant days before he was found unresponsive in his Northern Correctional Center jail cell earlier this week.

According to The Courant, the 50-year-old Hayes wrote, "Northern is a psychological torture chamber." The letter was dated March 6 and received by The Courant on March 12, according to the paper.

"Not all but many staff enjoy the infliction of torment both physical and mental," Hayes reportedly wrote.

Hayes was found alone and unresponsive in his jail cell on March 10. He is reportedly recovering at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington.

Hayes was sentenced to death in December 2010 for his role in the 2007 home invasion and murders of Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and her daughters, Hayley, 17, and Michaela, 11, during an attack in their Cheshire home, which left Dr. William Petit seriously wounded. His co-defendant Joshua Komisarjevsky also received the death penalty.

In 2012, Hayes said he wanted to end his legal appeals and "go to the death chamber," according to reports. Hayes had said that he was abandoning his appeals because he is being subjected to "cruel and unusual punishment" by prison guards.
