Staff Cuts Will Impact Meriden, Southington Hospitals

Hartford HealthCare announced 350 positions will be eliminated because of declining insurance reimbursements.

The head of Hartford HealthCare, which partners with the MidState Medical Center in Meriden and the Hospital of Central Connecticut in Southington, announced the organization is eliminating 350 positions by the end of the month.

According to The Hartford Courant, Hartford HealthCare Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Flaks made the announcement in a staff letter Monday. In addition to the Meriden and Southington facilites, Hartford HealthCare also operates Hartford Hospital and the Institute of Living, smaller hospitals in Windham, New Britain and Norwich, as well as home health care services, nursing homes, and physicians' practices.

The staff reductions are necessary because more patients are covered by Medicare and Medicaid which reimburses at lower rates than private insurance, Flaks reportedly said.

About 34 staff positions targeted for reduction through layoffs, retirements and leaving vacant positions open are at MidState Medical Center and the Hospital of Central Connecticut. The remainder are at other facilities and parts of the health care system.

Hartford HealthCare conducted another round of staff cuts last November, involving 179 positions.
