Wallingford Resident Stephanie Griffin to Audition for ‘The Voice’

"It's always been a dream of mine," the 20-year-old Quinnipiac junior said when talking trying out for the NBC show.

Stephanie Griffin said she has only really auditioned for one thing in recent years: a play at Lyman High School where she landed a part as an extra.

But, Griffin is now taking a stab at a serious audition that could lead to a big performance. She’s taking a chance and trying out for the NBC singing competition show, “The Voice.”

“I wanted to do something for me this summer,” Griffin told Wallingford Patch. “This is the perfect time in my life to do something like this.”

The 20-year-old musically inclined Quinnipiac junior is not devoid of talent, or skills at performing. Griffin has her own YouTube channel where she sings covers of songs, and she has been singing in an indie/folk band that has performed on campus in recent years, she said.

Griffin said she had been considering trying out for a big-time show like "The Voice," but never paid much serious thought to the idea. Recently though, she found herself browsing the audition requirements on the website and decided to just give it a shot, saying she had nothing to lose from trying out.

The process is as follows: musicians will audition twice before hearing whether they are accepted back to actually perform on the TV show. The first audition is on July 28 in New York City, according to The Voice’s website.

“It’s always been a dream of mine,” Griffin said about the show. “Just going to the open auditions and seeing if I had a chance. I am only 20 years old. I figured I’d might as well do it (try out) while I am young.”

So what songs will she try out with? Griffin said she hasn’t decided yet, although it will be something along the lines of Amy Winehouse, Etta James or perhaps even Adele.

“Or a country song,” she adds, with a chuckle. “Yeah, I have an eclectic taste of music… it’ll probably be something very bluesy or deep that I can put a lot of emotion in.”

A 2010 graduate of Lyman Hall, Griffin is a media studies major at Quinnipiac University in Hamden where she also minors in music.
