Patriotic-Inspired Performance: My Wife Abigail Adams, America’s First Modern Woman

Wallingford Public Library presents actor George Baker in his role as President John Adams for the program “My Wife Abigail Adams, America’s First Modern Woman, Thursday, July 10 at 7:00 p.m.

Abigail Adams—outspoken First Lady, and mother of the sixth American president, John Quincy Adams, was a savvy business woman. She possessed nontraditional financial acumen, tenacity, and the ability to create wealth during a time when women were not even allowed to own property. As portrayed by Baker, and with affection, humor, and admiration, President John Adams will reveal how the ever-audacious Abigail defied both law and the sexist conventions of her time to make her family prosperous.

Baker will appear in the style of 18th-century clothing worn by President John Adams, and will perform several period or patriotic songs during his presentation: “God Save the King,” “Yankee Doodle,” “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” and “America, I Gave My Best to You. ”
